The Orkney Archaeology Festival returned this September for its second year, welcoming excellent attendance and a sense of shared enthusiasm across the islands. With events frequently reaching capacity and visitors travelling from across Orkney, the UK and beyond, the festival once again demonstrated the deep public interest in the stories held within our landscape.
This year’s programme offered a rich variety of experiences — from guided walks at iconic Neolithic sites to behind‑the‑scenes tours, hands‑on workshops, family activities, and expert talks covering everything from submerged landscapes to Viking crafts. The breadth of events ensured that people of all ages and levels of archaeological knowledge found something to enjoy.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the knowledgeable speakers, the friendly atmosphere, and the chance to engage directly with archaeologists, rangers and heritage specialists. Others commented on how special it felt to explore Orkney’s past in such an accessible and community‑centred way.
With such strong support and enthusiasm, planning is already beginning for the 2027 festival — our third year. Organisers are excited to build on this year’s success and develop an even more ambitious programme that continues to celebrate discovery, learning and Orkney’s extraordinary archaeological heritage.
