Orkney Time Travel Workshop, Make a Viking leather bag

An introduction to leather working. Leather has been used to make clothing, leather bags, belts and countless other items for thousands of years. This workshop will introduce you to some basic leather making skills. During the workshop you will be making your own leather purse. This is designed to be hung on a belt and draws its inspiration from Orkney’s Viking past. The methods you will be using have changed little over hundreds – if not thousands – of years.

In the workshop we will look at how to dye the leather, and how to create uniform and straight stitching lines. Finally, you will use a traditional two-needle stitching method to finish your purse. When the session is complete, you will have an understanding of working with leather and the basic skills, to make simple, everyday leather objects. And most importantly, you will have made yourself a leather purse for your belt.

This workshop costs £20 per person, which includes materials, and is limited to 10 participants.
