SUMMARY:On-Line Talk ‘Roots and routes’: Journey along the Ara Metua
DESCRIPTION:Our own Professor Colin Richards and OAS board member and Professor Jane Downes are giving a ‘not to miss’ free talk which is a Joint event by OAS and UHI \nhttps://archaeologyorkney.com/2022/03/11/roots-and-routes-seminar/ \nJoin us on March 25\, when Professor Colin Richards and Professor Jane Downes take us to the Cook Islands in our next UHI Archaeology Institute seminar. \n\nProfessor Jane Downes and Professor Colin Richards.\n\nIn Roots and Routes in Polynesia: investigating the fabulous Ara Metua and the colonisation of Rarotonga\, Cook Islands\, Colin and Jane will look at the Ara Metua (also known as the Great Road of Toi) that runs around the island of Rarotonga and its significance in the Polynesian traditions of journeying and voyaging. \nThe Ara Metua is the largest “monument” in Polynesia. As a circuit road\, it has neither start nor finish but formally links different areas of the island. It also connects the islanders with the founding ancestor Tang’ia because it materialises and commemorates the route taken when Rarotonga was settled and sub-divided into different sectors. \nThe seminar is a joint event with the Orkney Archaeology Society and will focus on the two professors’ current research into the Ara Metua – its building\, and associated maraes (temples)\, in a broader Polynesian context. \nThe free online seminar is at 7pm GMT on Friday\, March 25. A recording will be posted here shortly afterwards. \nTo book a place\, click here.

SUMMARY:Brochtoberfest: Paddling across the North Sea: Shetland’s Ancient Sea Roads
DESCRIPTION:A live talk by Dr Esther Renwick\, and Dr Marc Chivers\n \nDr Esther Renwick is co-director of Moder Dy a community interest company based in Shetland\, that promotes its maritime heritage. Her background is in the place and space and how people experience archaeology and heritage sites. \nDr Marc Chivers is is also co-director of Moder Dy and undertook a PhD in clinker-built boats from Shetland. \nThe archaeological record in Shetland dates to c.4300 BCE. However\, the first tangible evidence for boat travel to and around this archipelago does not appear until cal. 850-960 CE. Travel and subsistence continued to be reliant upon small open boats until just after the second world war. In today’s society the way we view the sea has been turned on its head: we now view this as a barrier\, rather than as a means for travel. This was an alien concept to our coastal dwelling ancestors\, not only in archipelagos such as Shetland but\, throughout the coastal communities of Europe and beyond: as bound was the boatless person! Within this talk we examine the evidence\, speculative and otherwise\, for pre-historic boat travel\, placing this into a Northern Isles context. Our journey will then navigate through Shetland’s traditional boat culture examining the archaeological record that will build us a more complete seaward narrative of an almost forgotten and lost way of life.
