SUMMARY:Talk: Murder\, mayhem and misdemeanour: the application of archaeology to the recently deceased.
DESCRIPTION:by Dr Jen Miller\, UHI Archaeology \nThis talk is suitable for adults only because of some of the images. \nBecause of the nature of the subject this talk will NOT be recorded. \nPolice forces UK wide have come a long way forensically over the past three decades.  As forensic science has advanced\, so has appreciation of the value of forensic archaeology in the investigation of complex cases involving suspicious death. Standard techniques used by archaeologists everywhere in search\, excavation and artefact recovery can be extrapolated to modern crime scene analysis when coupled with a sound understanding of chain of evidence and legal principles.  Through a series of high-profile case studies\, this presentation aims to demonstrate how a ‘degree in digging holes’\, together with a solid understanding of legal requirements can help find a grave or exclude areas of suspicion. It can provide informed comment on how a body was concealed\, what tools were used\, and interpret sequence of events and timings of death. Crucially\, archaeological techniques supports jury understanding of complex events\, demonstrating the rigour applied to the investigation and thus helping to support criminal justice. \n

SUMMARY:Talk: CHANGE OF VENUE :Carved in Stone: Art and architecture at the Ness of Brodgar by Dr Antonia Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Antonia Thomas will talk about her work recording the decorated stones from the Ness of Brodgar\, both during the excavations and as post-excavation specialist: from the first decorated stone that was found during the excavations in 2006\, to the carved slab that turned up in the last hours of digging in 2024. She will discuss the different types of decorated and dressed stone found on the site\, from small fragments and hidden stones\, to dramatic statement pieces\, and from delicately incised slabs to chiselled and pick-dressed pillars\, and the challenges and potential of recording this incredible and unique assemblage\, which now numbers over 1000 stones.\n\n  \n\nBrief bio: Antonia Thomas is Associate Professor of Art and Archaeology at UHI\, based within the Archaeology Institute at UHI Orkney. Her PhD (University of Aberdeen\, 2016)\,  ‘Art and Architecture in Neolithic Orkney: Process\, Temporality\, and Context’\, involved a detailed study of the decorated stonework from Maeshowe\, Skara Brae\, and particularly the Ness of Brodgar where she has been part of the excavation and post-excavation team since 2006. Antonia was a member of the advisory panel of Scotland’s Rock Art Project (ScRAP)\, and has been commissioned by Historic Environment Scotland to undertake specialist architectural survey work at tombs in Orkney\, including the Holm of Papa Westray South\, where she identified previously unknown carvings\, and rediscovered some which had been thought to have been long destroyed. Her interest in art and archaeology ranges from the Neolithic to the present day\, and in 2020 she launched a unique interdisciplinary master’s programme in Contemporary Art and Archaeology at UHI\, which continues to attract students from across the UK\, Europe\, and North America.

DESCRIPTION:Visitors are very welcome to come along between 10.00 – 16.30 and see the work which will be taking place at the Hall of Clestrain.  Parking within the grounds of the Hall.  This is free to attend\, but the John Rae Society would be delighted to receive donations and memberships. \nThere is a shelter and toilets. SUMMARY:Life at the Coast 200 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:William Daniell’s voyage from Land’s End to Orkney \nTalk by Tom Dawson of The SCAPE Trust\, University of St Andrews.  The talk will be together with the Sanday Afternoon Club. \nTwo hundred years ago\, William Daniell published the final part of his ‘Voyage Round Great Britain’. Starting in 1813\, Daniell took ten years to create 308 drawings depicting the entire coast of Britain. Over half of his hand-coloured engravings were of Scotland\, including twelve from Orkney. His detailed images show natural features\, industry\, harbours\, lighthouses\, people and wildlife\, accompanied with stories of current events including shipwrecks and American privateers. With a focus on Orkney and north Scotland\, this talk will show how Daniell’s work remains relevant today\, helping us understand the huge social and environmental change witnessed at the coast. \n  \nAdmission is free and all are welcome

SUMMARY:St Magnus Cathedral Upper Levels Tour
DESCRIPTION:This amazing tour takes you into the upstairs\, hidden parts of the cathedral\, including the triforium\, clerestory and tower. The tour will show you the infamous hangman’s ladder\, the 16th century bells\, and more\, finishing at the top of the tower where you can see stunning views of Kirkwall and beyond. \nThe meeting point is by the custodian’s office in the south transept – go to the middle of the building and turn right. Look for the sign.  Cost: £15.60pp no concessions\, payment by card or cash. Booking is ESSENTIAL\, as numbers are strictly limited. Call 01856874894 to book. SUMMARY:Investigating Orkney's Submerged Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:– a walk and talk at the Bay of Ireland\, Stenness\, with Dr Scott Timpany. \nOrkney has been described as a “tree-less island”\, however\, in the past there was thriving woodland across the islands. You may be surprised to know that Orkney’s prehistoric woodland (some 6000 years old) can still be visited today. It survives trapped in peat deposits in locations around the coastline of Orkney\, occasionally revealed by the tide as it scours and peels back layers of this peat to expose remains of these remnant woodlands described as submerged forests. On this walk we will visit one of these locations – Bay of Ireland – view the deposits and discuss the lost world of Orkney. \nMeet at Finstown carpark for 2pm.  You will travel to site in the minibus\, with the event due to finish at about 4pm. This is a free event but places are limited so you must book in advance if you want to be taken to site. \nBook via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1994503109491?aff=oddtdtcreator \nYou can make your own way there and park at the Brig O’Waithe\, but parking there is very limited. \nYou will be visiting an intertidal location so we would recommend people wear wellies or stout walking boots; waterproofs should also be brought along. The walk is along a saltmarsh area with lots of little creeks and gullies\, so if you are unstable on your feet etc. then this event may not be for you. Young people U16 are welcome with an adult\, and dogs are also welcome. The walk will be circa 2km. \n

SUMMARY:Managing World Heritage for the benefit of local communities
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anne Allen. King Street Halls\, Kirkwall \nDr Allen is the Manager at Durham Castle and Cathedral World Heritage Site and Focal Point for UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities \nDurham has been a place of learning and worship for over 1000 years.  Their 2025-2035 World Heritage Site Management Plan seeks to harness the power of our world heritage as a resource for lifelong learning and regenerative tourism. OAS Vice Chair Colleen Batey has recently been appointed as inaugural WHS Honorary Professor of Lifelong Learning. \nThis talk explores how by adopting a place-based approach they are involving the communities they serve and recognising the local values of the site alongside the outstanding universal value that is inscribed on the World Heritage List.  As a result\, they are investing significantly in increasing public access and improving the gardens and designed landscape of the World Heritage Site. \nThis talk takes place in King Street Halls\, Kirkwall and is free to attend\, there will be a raffle to raise funds towards the festival costs and to support Orkney Archaeology Society. This hall is accessible\, the talk will be taking place in the hall on the ground floor.
